The Kirin (or Qilin) is a mythical Chinese creature that is symbolic of prosperity, particularly for rulers and sages. It resembles the Chinese dragon with horse or deer-like features and is also commonly equated to the unicorn in western mythologies. The concept was to fuse these two "unicorns" into one concept. I chose the more horselike features and long tail and mane from the European unicorn alongside the dragon head + neck and decoration based on Chinese horse armor and Kirin statues.

This was an exercise in highpoly sculpting, I challenged myself to work only with my own insert brushes and alphas. These will be available for free download in the Resources section of my site.
